How to care for your aiayu knits
Generally, it is not necessary to wash knitwear after each wear because most wools are naturally self-cleaning. Wool fibres have a unique structure that repels dirt and odours, allowing them to stay fresh for longer periods. The natural lanolin present in wool also acts as a protective barrier against bacteria and stains, reducing the need for frequent washing.
This self-cleaning property helps maintain the quality and longevity of the knitwear while minimising the wear and tear caused by repeated laundering. If you do want to wash it, we recommend hand washing in cold water using a natural wool wash. Then, roll the sweater in a clean towel to absorb excess water before laying flat to dry. Alternatively, using a good washing machine with a delicate, hand-wash or wool setting with a maximum temperature of 30°C on a gentle or no cycle. Don’t go above 30°C as the wool is likely to felt. Remove promptly and dry flat. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric, as it can cause fibres to break and pill.
We don’t recommend dry cleaning knitwear as the chemicals can damage and weaken wool.
A little pilling is normal for fine and delicate fibres which makes them more susceptible to friction such as cashmere. When the fibres rub against each other or against other surfaces, they can break and form small balls of fibres known as pills. The cashmere fibres are also relatively shorter compared to other materials and tend to work their way out of the yarn more easily, leading to pilling. To minimise friction avoid wearing your knitwear under coats or jackets made of rough materials. Be mindful of bags or accessories that may rub against the fabric.
If pilling occurs for smaller areas and lighter pilling, use a cashmere comb to gently brush away pills or use a lint roller. However, manually picking off pills with your fingers is the safest option. If you want to use a fabric shaver, be careful to avoid damaging the fabric.
To eliminate wrinkles from your knit, flip it inside-out and lay flat. Set the iron to the lowest heat setting and place a damp cloth between the iron and the knitwear to avoid direct contact. You can also use a hand-held steamer but make sure to keep some distance between the hot face and the garment.
Knitwear is best stored folded in a drawer or shelf space. Hanging will risk it losing its shape. Cedar wood balls or cotton balls with drops of lavender are great as natural repellent to moths.
Prolonging the life of textiles through proper care and repair, rather than replacement, is one of the most efficient ways to reduce the textile industry's environmental impact and preserve natural resources. When done correctly, a good repair can breathe new life into an item and shift perception that tears, holes, and other imperfections diminish the value of finely crafted pieces.
